Tuesday 23rd June 2009 Alec Downie
NEXT EVENT: SATURDAY 1ST AUGUST 2009. 7PM.
LOCATION: Tollhouse Studios, 10 Possil Road, Glasgow, G4 9SY.
A showcase of original and innovative offerings from a host of Scottish visual artists, music makers and film creators: to inspire ideas and cultivate collaborative creativity.
After the success of the pilot event in September last year and the first 'official' One Creative Scotland event, in January 2009; One Creative Scotland (founded by Clare Kelly, drummer of indie band, Suspire – and taken to new heights by Tollhouse Studio owner, Chris Deeprose), is ready to celebrate once more in the old Singer Sewing Factory - now Tollhouse Studios, on Saturday 1st August from 7pm.
So what’s the vision? ...To celebrate the diverse creation of music, film and visual arts evolving throughout Glasgow. Amongst One Creative Scotland’s rapidly growing supporters is Tchai Ovna tea house and Scottish indie label, First Aid Records. The popularity of the event with bohemian underground music and art lovers has been cultivated in the homely and fruitful vibe of Tollhouse Studios. Primarily a music rehearsal facility, the multi-room complex has been praised by patrons for its explorative characteristics. “It’s like a wee indoor festival” – said one attendee.
Speaking of the One Creative Scotland event, Clare from Suspire says:
“We just wanted to provide a nurture-ground for new works to be shared. It is important to keep each other uplifted – especially during such times of recession. Through this; we have now gained the support of Glasgow west-end eco-label, First Aid Records.”
Although not performing at their home event this time round, Suspire and Studio Owner Chris Deeprose have invited an exciting mix of fresh music acts to perform at the 1st August event. The line-up will include:
Anna Meldrum (with backing band) will kick-start the night in Studio C; followed by ‘The Cinnamons’ - having recently supported Electro-Pop band, ‘Metronomy’ at King Tut’s in Glasgow. ‘Studio B will see Celtic Connections performers, ‘The John Langan Band’ entertain, as well as a soaring vocal performance from solo acoustic artist, ‘Brian Cunningham’ - and the rather ‘artsy’: ‘Spy Movie’.
Meanwhile, live jazz will flow throughout the night in the main foyer, amicably provided by Ray Harris’ backing band, (just back from performing the ‘i-Jazz Festival’ in Amsterdam); which will rest with intermissions from ambient DJ sets. The live bill continues in Studio C, with high energy performances from 4-piece, ‘Selective Service’; indie rockers ‘October Sky’, and a grand finale from Clydebank marvels: ‘Someone’s Sons’.
The One Creative Scotland Event in January 2009 was hosted by the king of Indie himself: BBC Radio Scotland DJ, Jim Gellatly. Gellatly conducted post-performance interviews at the January event, now available as a podcast on local online radio station, Radiomagnetic.com. Gellatly has expressed great interest in presenting the forthcoming event, but has not yet fully confirmed.
There will be also be a display of exciting works from visual artists in the main foyer in the form of Digital Art, Fine Art and Photography, some sourced from post and present students from Glasgow School of Art, which will also be available for purchase at the One Creative Scotland event at very affordable prices. Thomas Deeprose (Urban Outfitters Display Artist) will curate all artwork. Featured artists previously included: Trevor Kemp, Gordon Burniston, ‘Under The Kitchen Sink’, Nicki Gregson, Kirsty Whiten, Amy Whiten (Recoat Gallery), Diamond Footprint and Thomas Deeprose (D.I.G).
At least 12 visual artists and 9 music acts will be involved in the forthcoming event, with plans underway for converting the box-shaped ‘Studio A’ into a short-film screen zone.
The event will also be filmed by Stage Storm Productions. (TBC)
Speaking about One Creative Scotland, Event Organiser, Clare Kelly said:
“Glasgow is full of live music venues, but none quite like this. This has a very homely feel to it. Instead of being targeted towards the general public, this gathering of sorts is aimed at other artists. Bringing Scotland’s creative folk together in this way has proven highly popular amongst the local and underground Arts scene in Glasgow – and it has grown completely naturally. Playing with Paul and Mark in Suspire is really where it all stemmed. We have been part of the live gig scene in Glasgow for over four years, in various guises, meeting a wonderful collection of people along the way. One Creative Scotland is all about celebrating them – and all the rest we’ve still to meet. Chris Deeprose is an exciting creative entrepreneur, who has been instrumental in the development of One Creative Scotland. We love the vibe his studio has, and just had to create a scene here. This is only the beginning.”
